Three Pillars for Health and Safety in the Construction and Operation of Data Centres

Three Pillars for Health and Safety in the Construction and Operation of Data Centres

28 April, 2025

April, 28th is the International Day for Safety and Health at Work, thus, a perfect opportunity to reflect on best practices in this field applied to the construction and operation of data centres. The development and operation of these centres, which are essential for the digitisation of society, require a rigorous approach to health and safety to ensure a safe working environment. Here are three essential keys to achieve this:

1. Documentary Control and Onboarding

Documentary control and onboarding are fundamental pillars for safety in the construction and operation of data centres. Proper document management ensures that all procedures, regulations and records are up to date and accessible to all parties involved. This includes the data centre operator (in this case, Nabiax) verifying that any company accessing the data centre complies with current health and safety regulations.

In addition, a well-structured onboarding process ensures that all employees joining one of our data centres understand the safety rules and operating procedures from day one. Initial and ongoing training is crucial to minimise risks and ensure a safe working environment.

2. Proactive Communication and Preventive Culture

Proactive communication and the promotion of a preventive culture are essential for data centre security. Open and constant communication between all those involved in a construction project, or in the day-to-day operation of a data centre, allows potential risks to be identified and addressed before they materialise. This includes regular safety meetings, incident reports and communication channels accessible to all parties involved.

In addition, promoting a preventive culture involves training and motivating workers to adopt safe practices and to share any concerns or suggestions. Prevention is the best strategy to avoid accidents and ensure a safe working environment.

3. Feedback and Continuous Improvement Mechanisms

Feedback and continuous improvement mechanisms are vital to maintaining high standards of occupational safety and health. Implementing feedback systems allows workers to share their experiences and suggestions on safety practices. This can include review meetings and suggestion boxes. The information gathered should be analysed and used to continually improve safety policies and procedures. Continuous improvement ensures that the organisation adapts to new challenges and technologies, while keeping security at the forefront.

Finally, the ability to coordinate and work as a team between the different companies involved in the construction and operation of data centres is crucial for occupational health and safety, as well as for maintaining excellence in business continuity. Effective collaboration enables the sharing of knowledge, experience, resources and best practices, creating a safer and more efficient working environment. On this International Day for Safety and Health at Work, let us remember that safety is a shared responsibility and that, working together, we can build a safer future for all.
